Oak Hill Baptist Church was organized in 1915. Eighteen African American residents founded it under the leadership of Rev. A.C. Ray.
The founders were former members of Richmond's Pleasant Green Baptist Church.
Early gatherings began with a brush arbor on an "oaken hill" at the church's current location.
Initial services were held in Alex Jackson's home. In 1916, the congregation purchased the land from Sam and Lizzie Jackson. They then constructed a sanctuary on the site.
Throughout its history, Oak Hill Baptist Church has played a significant role in the lives of its members and the surrounding community. The church has participated in various youth, music, mission, and service outreach programs.
Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church is a place of historical importance, particularly for its connection to Barbara Jordan, a prominent figure in American politics.
